Determining the location of protected areas in France: Does “scientific interest” matter?

چکیده
Protected areas are one of the main policy instruments used by policymakers to tackle current biodiversity crisis. While numerous studies highlight inability such protect full range biodiversity, procedures which protected created nevertheless remain understudied. A better understanding related processes is necessary overcome “research-implementation gap” and, hopefully, decrease loss. This article seeks fill this blind spot in conservation conducting interdisciplinary research at crossroads ecology and studies. We applied mixed methods (i.e. quantitative qualitative analysis) historical archives national nature reserve (NNR) projects identify weight scientific statements other factors involved decision-making process. Our results reveal a two-step Scientific opinion about NNR operates as primary filter. Then, another triage made under social, political economic interests. Such situation challenges idea that more evidence would lead conservation. In our opinion, key issue determine ways improve success rather than improving data algorithms. sense, we call for implementation an “informed opportunism” approach suggest some leads favor its practical application. highlights importance reach goals.

The link between location features and the propensity to start a new firm is a subject that did not get much attention in Iran until recently. This paper is the first attempt on this proposition and is concerned with deliberating the effect of demographical and industrial characteristics of location on start-up rates in Iranian manufacturing industries. To fulfill this aim, regional panel data ...
متن کاملHigh and Far: Biases in the Location of Protected Areas
BACKGROUND About an eighth of the earth's land surface is in protected areas (hereafter "PAs"), most created during the 20(th) century. Natural landscapes are critical for species persistence and PAs can play a major role in conservation and in climate policy. Such contributions may be harder than expected to implement if new PAs are constrained to the same kinds of locations that PAs currently...
متن کاملSampling alien species inside and outside protected areas: Does it matter?
Data of alien species presences are generally more readily available in protected than non-protected areas due to higher sampling efforts inside protected areas. Are the results and conclusions based on analyses of data collected in protected areas representative of wider non-protected regions? We address this question by analysing some recently published data of alien plants in Greece. Mixed e...
